Get off your phone

We all know that feeling when we go “now i'm going to shut of my laptop/computer and got to sleep” and as soon as you get into bed we turn on your phone. It's not like we do much important stuff on it but without it we tend to feel helpless. With social media and electronic communication everywhere you look it's hard to stay out of the trend.

Social media has changed how we interact with each other and is usually a part of our daily lives. When it comes to friends you don't have to call them anymore you have a variety of thing, you can snapchat, facetime, and direct message them just to name a few. There are so many different ways to stay in touch with your friends. As for family like parents and grandparents, it helps you stay connected through many different platforms even when you're oceans apart, I know personally that it is a good/funny feeling to see you grandmother liking your instagram photo’s. Even teacher are learning to go with it, i remember that there was a time when a teacher saw you phone and it was confiscated but now teachers are using it as a means of teaching. For example edmodo, teachers can send a message directly to all their students directly informing them about assignments, trips and upcoming events. They can use it as a means of learning like this blogging unit, it still it school work, we are getting marked but it's over electronic communication.

These changes that are made through our everyday lives are altering our relationship, we sometimes tend to become less social in public or never really leave the house…. But there are also positive aspects. We can talk to people anywhere as long as we have Wi-Fi and we can send and show pictures to anyone we want within minutes.  

I believe that they should be incorporated into academic settings because almost everybody has access to it. But i think that i shouldn’t be misused. The generation now days are going out less and less and we are the only one at loss. Yes it is a good idea to make the text book and e-book so students don’t have to borrow others or take pictures of the questions or even lug the text book back and forth but i don't think that it should be used 24/7. Like maybe a photo essay instead of a powerpoint presentation? That would get us out side (but in the respectable weather, I'm not leaving the house during winter)

Schools are not the only ones using social media, businesses are also using social media as an advertising platform. Things like if you follow us we will give you a $5 coupon for the next time you shop at our store. These not only keep you posted on what is happening but helps the company bring in new customers.    

Some regulations that should be put in place should be things like not for personal use during school, banning certain sites (this has its setbacks but will help with doing work related things). I also think that there should be a certain limit, we have our phones and that's one thing but plus the computer for homework and not so much homework time is a lot of time.

Overall social media has its setbacks but there are always ups and downs with everything

Misbehaving celebrities

Fans of celebrities such as Lindsay Lohan, Charlie Sheen, Chris Brown, Justin Bieber, and Kanye West stay idolized and popular due to people either looking up or down at/on them. When they do things that people usually look down on their popularity grows because people say things like “Oh did you see what “so-and-so” did. I can't believe they did that”. This usually causes that happening to gain popularity until it is talked about on the radio, TV shows and magazines earning them even more popularity that to begin with. The same thing happens when positive impact is made on society. If you look at it in a way misbehaving actually earn celebrities a bit more popularities because not only do their fans what to know what happened but others as well.   

Also in the society we live in today it is filled with social media. You really can go far without seeing an advertisement with a celebrity on it or a brand name store using endorsement. Practically everyone has accessibility to the Internet and many popular things are based on finding out information on famous people. From this environment paparazzi is established and is one of the reasons that celebrities may “misbehave”. Due to the stress put on famous people there is a need to exceed expectations and manage a “normal” life and be healthy and look pleasing for society's expectations and hole lot of other things.   

I think that they, as celebrities should not be put on a pedestal because they are apparently “superior” to the working class but they should not be blamed for everything that happens. Some celebrities may be irresponsible or misbehave and stories about that come up but not all the stories we see are the truth. We can’t just expect everything we read to be ‘the truth’ but we can hold celebrities responsible for their behavior when it comes to certain things like underage drinking, drinking and driving, overdose of substances, etc. These are things done as an act of free will, no one told you to do that and it's not like there isn’t warning in advertisements on TV, websites and even boards on the highway tell you not to drink and drive. (Asking for more warnings than that is a bit much if you ask me). But as for their punishment, yes I think they should be punished just like you and I would be there is no reason for them not to be. They know the consequences and they know that there are probably a lot of young people looking up on them.

School shootings, such as the one at Dunbarton High School in Pickering, Ontario leave us with many questions. What could have caused people to do such a thing? Is there a way to stop all of this? What could we do?

Well we can’t stop all violence once and for all with a push of a button. Quoting my Animal Farm essay, “It is impossible to a create a perfect world because everyone has their own interpretation of what it would be.”. We all don’t have a reason to be violent but there are some people who are not as privileged as us. The best way to deal with problems such as school shootings it to deal with the smaller problems around us before trying to take on the larger ones. Schools are doing everything from installing metal detectors, hiring security guards, making students wear uniform, so it is easier to determine an outside not part of the school, starting anti-bullying programs and counseling. But do any of these prove effective in lowering violence?

I think that the best way we can avoid these acts of violence is to work together as a community. Raise awareness, which has been happening often now, we as a community can also inform people/children about safety precautions and over all try to help the kids most in need (i.e. counseling, if needed, after school programs, make them feel welcome, etc.).   

There are many available services to the students of Mary Ward that allow us to find help some of which include the guidance office, chaplaincy, our teacher adviser and even each other. Some ways that we can create new services to better the lives of those getting bullied would be to reward positive behavior as a school (i.e. free civvies day) and get parents involved. Overall it all comes down to bullying but together as a community we can help those in need.

Can you Believe it?

We often tell ourselves not to believe everything on the Internet yet that is where we get most of our information. While there are reliable and unreliable sources we still have only ourselves to blame when it comes to believing things straight away without a moments hesitation.

People of the 21^st century are very dependent on the information that is on the Internet. Like the meme about the Powerball lottery that said that everyone in the U.S would be able to receive 4.33 million each. People were so quick at believing this and sending it to people that not a lot of people took the time to actually figure out that everyone would actually get only $4.39 each.

 

The media uses the people who are quick to accept information that may not always be truthful as a way of gaining popularity they create dishonest information about certain events, people and objects to create conflict between commenters and viewers. When other people see all the views and comments they are interested in finding out about what everyone if talking about. This allows them to create more and get more viewers and also gain money. Magazines do this as well recently on the radio they said that magazines have a certain amount of untrue information they add to an article which allows the article to be “more interesting”.

Over all I feel like the media not only takes advantage of us but we are allowing them to by being gullible which allows the media to use us.

Ads are something that we live with in this day and age but they can also get quite out of hand and irritating. YouTube Red allows you to watch ad-free videos from any console that is compatible with YouTube. Even for this there are downsides and upsides.

One of the downsides is that this will cost you $9.99 a month and for iOS users, they will be charged $12.99 to cover Apple’s in-app purchase tax. Another downside is that at the moment YouTube Red is limited to 10 of the most popular channels because it is so early in the launch but there is no knowing what more are coming. There is also another slight downside, they say that you can listen/watch videos of line but they don’t tell you that you are only allowed to keep them for 30 days.

The main plus side you get on YouTube Red is ad free YouTube, without ads before, during and after the video you are watching. In addition the channels that are partnered with YouTube Red will receive budgets “to create videos equivalent to the current television shows”. With this money YouTubers are launching series (kind of like current T.V shows). For example Pewdiepie is launching a series called “Scare Pewdiepie” which is being managed by the creator of “the walking dead”. There are also more options to watch like one called “the laser team” which is a featured action comedy film follows a group who discover an alien ship carrying mysterious cargo which leads to a battle to save the earth. They say that their goal is to provide paying viewers with “a more sleek and polished” watching experience in addition to the already created YouTube library.  

With YouTube Red you are also allowed to listen to videos in the background of a mobile device while on another app or while it is locked. You also get access to Google and YouTube’s music library (which you have to pay for without YouTube Red). With the added bonus that you can watch videos offline for 30 days

So will I be getting YouTube Red? No I don’t think so because as irritating ads are I don’t think that it is worth it for me to spend $10 on something thing that I have been living without.

Tv is dying

Is tv dying?

I think so...

I think that TV is dying out as opposed to new networking but not very soon. We probably have about 10 - 15 years before tv is a thing of the past. I for one are one of the people who have opted out of cable TV and have added more GIGs to my internet plan because it becomes cheaper for me this way. I have as many shows as I want whenever I want and I don’t have to schedule my life around the TV schedule.

With all the technology advancing the other providers have to advance to. For example Bell has added "Fibe TV" which allows you to stem, pause, record and even save live shows. All with the easy access through tv. Also Rogers members get an option for "Shomi plus" which allows exclusive content. Something else that shows that cable tv will die out soon is that tv's nowadays have the option to stream youtube videos straight of your tv. They even sell devices that allow you to stream Netflix, youtube and other cable alternatives through plug in.

Even with all these alternatives people still watch cable tv. That is also how places like Netflix gets popularity because they allow people to watch their favourite shows at any time, place and device. 

In other words cable dies, Netflix and Shomi and other alternative go down as well.
